Acacia Lodge Care Home: A Love Story

Love’s Journey: Christine & John at Acacia Lodge

Love has a way of blossoming in the most unexpected places, and the story of Christine and John Dowling, two cherished residents of Acacia Lodge Care Home, is a testament to the enduring power of true love.

Their story begins in August 1968, when John’s company transferred him from Birmingham to Hull. On his very first day at the new office, John caught sight of Christine, a dark-haired young woman working in the accounts department. Little did he know, that moment would be the start of a lifelong journey together.

Fast forward to February 1969: one Friday evening, John and his flatmates were discussing an anonymous Valentine’s card that had sparked curiosity in the office. Speculation swirled around the possible sender, but John had no idea it was Christine who had penned the note. That very night, in a local pub, Christine approached John alongside her friends and confessed that she had sent the card. It was a simple gesture that led to a profound connection, marking the beginning of a love story that has lasted more than five decades.

Now, 54 years later, John and Christine are still as deeply in love as the day they met. Together, they’ve built a beautiful life, with two children and five grandchildren to show for their years of happiness. As John reflects, “She truly is the love of my life.”

At Acacia Lodge Care Home, we are privileged to witness and celebrate such incredible stories of love and devotion. Christine and John’s journey reminds us all of the beauty of love, its ability to grow and flourish over time, and the joy of sharing life with someone who holds your heart.
