Gardening has a unique way of connecting people to cherished memories, and for many of Bourne House residents, it’s a pastime deeply rooted in their past. With fond recollections of tending to their own gardens and allotments, the residents’ passion for planting inspired an ongoing gardening project that began in mid-September.

Cultivating Joy: How It All Began
The project was launched while the weather was still warm, allowing residents to plant bulbs outdoors. As the seasons changed, so did their approach, transitioning the activity indoors to ensure everyone could continue nurturing their plants, regardless of the weather.
Planting and Bonding
Under the guidance of the Lifestyle Coordinator, the activity assistant, and additional care staff, residents worked together to plant tulip, daffodil, and snowdrop bulbs. The tulip and daffodil bulbs were sourced from a local garden centre, and the enthusiastic team ensured that all residents, regardless of mobility levels, could take part in the experience.
Gathered around the large table under the gazebo, they carefully placed their bulbs in plastic cups before transferring them to trays for support. Since we didn’t have a greenhouse, we had to rely on nature, finding a semi-sheltered spot in the garden to protect the young bulbs from harsh winds, heavy rain, and frost.

Sowing Seeds of Friendship and Memories
The project was enriched by moments of joy, laughter, and reminiscing. Residents shared fond memories of their gardening days:
Pam: “We used to have a beautiful garden, and I spent most of my time gardening.”
Gary: “I used to have my own allotment many years ago.”
One resident, John, particularly immersed himself in the project. With more freedom to move about the garden, he became our unofficial ‘garden guardian,’ frequently checking on the bulbs and rescuing any that had toppled due to inclement weather. His dedication paid off, and his pride was evident as he watched the bulbs flourish into beautiful daffodils, tulips, and snowdrops.
Refreshments and Relaxation
After a productive time tended to their growing plants, residents took the time to enjoy well-earned refreshments. The break from the gardening provided a moment to discuss and reflect on their horticultural endeavours, whilst enjoying tea, coffee and biscuits.

The enthusiasm and commitment from both residents and staff made this project a resounding success. The smiles, the stories, and the stunning blooms that resulted from our residents’ efforts make it clear: this is an activity we will undoubtedly repeat later in the year!
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to cultivate joy through gardening!
