Coppice Lea celebrates a century of memories

coppice lea 100th birthday

Coppice Lea Care Home in Merstham is celebrating a remarkable milestone for resident, Phyllis, who marked her 100th birthday this March. Born in 1925 in Whyteleafe, Surrey, Phyllis has lived through a century of change, and her life has been filled with incredible stories and achievements.

In her school years, Phyllis had a love for English, sports, and music, particularly enjoying her singing lessons. At just 14, she witnessed the start of World War II, which saw her brother, Charles, head off to war. At 17, she joined the Land Army, where she worked on farms in Woking, performing tough tasks like hedging, ditching, and pest control, all while enduring long hours and unpredictable weather. The women of the Land Army played a vital role in supporting the country’s farming efforts during the war, and Phyllis’ dedication was a testament to their hard work.

In 1950, she met Dennis, a tractor driver, and the couple soon settled in Surrey. Their home was always lively, filled with friends and family, as they loved hosting parties. Phyllis and Dennis had three children together, along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. An avid animal lover, Phyllis had many pets, including cats, dogs, and chickens. She and Dennis also enjoyed taking coach holidays, travelling all over the UK.

Phyllis moved into Coppice Lea in April 2018, where she has become a beloved member of the community. To celebrate her incredible achievement, the team at Coppice Lea prepared an extra special day for her, complete with beautiful decorations and a feast that included not one, but three stunning birthday cakes spelling the number 100.

Phyllis was surrounded by loved ones, reliving memories from her long and adventurous life, and receiving gifts and cards, including a message from the King and Queen.

The team at Coppice Lea are immensely proud to honour Phyllis, a truly special woman who has touched so many lives throughout her century of life.
