Last week, the team and residents at Deer Park View Care Centre in Teddington celebrated Ron’s 103rd birthday, marking an incredible milestone for a remarkable gentleman.
Born in East Ham, London, on 15th January 1922, Ron is Deer Park View’s oldest resident and is described as one of the most amazing people. Leaving school at 14, he went to work in an office for a short time before following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a lighterman, working on barges on the River Thames.
Ron’s life is full of fascinating stories, and he is particularly proud of his time as one of the brave soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy on 6th June 1944 during the D-Day landings. Serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), he stayed on the beach for several weeks, tirelessly repairing vital vehicles for the ongoing operations.
During his earlier life, his great interests were classical music and creating wonderful model ships based on historical research. He enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Irene, and together they have three children, nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
When asked what his secret to a long life is, Ron replied, “Why? Who wants to know?” then gave his signature chuckle and replied, ‘Determination, luck and keeping active.’
Joined by the team, fellow residents, and his daughter Cheryl, Ron marked his special day with a delightful tea party followed by a visit from Browells Wood Pet Therapy.
Lead Wellbeing Coordinator Monica, said, “I wanted to make sure Ron had an extra-special day to celebrate this wonderful milestone.”
Cheryl, Ron’s daughter, added, “Thank you so much, Monica, for a delightful birthday celebration. My dad truly enjoyed it.”
