Therapy horse brings comfort in Hillview Court resident’s final days

Residents and the team at Hillview Court Care Home in Sauchie recently experienced a touching farewell to one of their longest-standing residents, Stewart, who had lived at the home for 16 years. In his final days, Stewart shared a remarkable connection with Apollo, a miniature therapy horse, in an encounter that left a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.

During a visit from Lunar Eclipse Therapy Horses, Apollo seemed drawn to Stewart’s room, hovering outside before being guided inside. When Stewart laid eyes on Apollo, his face lit up with joy. Having no immediate family, Stewart was cared for by the devoted team at Hillview, who spent much of their time with him.

As Stewart’s health declined, Apollo’s owners, noticing the horse’s restlessness, arranged another visit. Sadly, Stewart passed away before Apollo could see him again, but the horse was brought into his room, providing comfort to the Hillview team.

Knowing the deep impact Apollo had on Stewart, Apollo and another horse Teddy attended his funeral. Their presence brought solace and a sense of peace to those gathered in remembrance.

Laura Davidson, Home Manager at Hillview, expressed her gratitude: “We feel incredibly lucky to have had this experience with Apollo and his handler, Cherene. Seeing how this therapy helped Stewart during his end-of-life journey left me speechless. I am incredibly proud of my colleagues who organised a beautiful service in remembrance of Stewart’s life. We would like to thank Cherene and Dani for bringing Apollo and Teddy to the funeral—we were truly touched.”

Cherene from Lunar Eclipse Therapy Horses shared her thoughts: “On a solemn yet deeply meaningful afternoon, Apollo and Teddy had the privilege of playing a special role in Stewart’s farewell service.

“It was incredible to witness the comfort that Apollo brought to Stewart in his final days—to see him finding the strength to hold Apollo’s lead rope, stroke his fluffy coat, and enjoy cuddles. Their bond was something truly special, a connection that went beyond words. It was an honour for Apollo and Teddy to have a final walk with Stewart—a final farewell made extra special.”
