A tribute to Kingsclear’s remarkable women

kingsclear international womens day

In honour of International Women’s Day, Kingsclear Care Home in Camberley are celebrating the incredible women of their community by sharing stories of their lives and achievements. These women, through their wisdom and kindness, have inspired so many, shaping the lives around them at the home.

Beryl

Beryl, born in 1936, grew up alongside her two brothers and attended Hammersmith College, where she honed her skills in dressmaking. A talented creative, Beryl eventually followed her dreams and opened her own arts and crafts shop, sharing her ideas with the community and encouraging others to embrace their creative side.

Known for her vibrant personality, Beryl is the life of every party. She loves to dance, especially Tap and Jive, and is always encouraging others to join in the fun. Her infectious energy and kindness make her a beloved member of the Kingsclear community.

Joy

Joy, born in 1923, has led a life full of adventure. Growing up with three brothers and two sisters, Joy was always surrounded by family and many dogs!

Joy was only 16 when World War 2 broke out and, at 18, she joined the Women’s Land Army, playing an important role in supporting the war effort. She went on to achieve some amazing feats such as climbing Mount Snowdon, becoming a champion diver, and reaching the remarkable milestone of turning 100.

When asked to share her wisdom at the age of 101, Joy’s advice was priceless: “Enjoy every minute and eat plenty of sweet treats!”

Jane

Jane was born in 1945 and spent her early years attending boarding school, eventually pursuing a career in nursing.

In her twenties, she was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, which left her hospitalised for eight weeks. She showed remarkable strength and perseverance in overcoming the difficulties.

Jane went on to become a seasoned traveller and her ventures around the world to countries including Hungary, Kazakhstan, Dubai, and Russia have given her a wealth of experience and knowledge of the world.

Mildred

Mildred was born in 1936 as the youngest of four siblings. A creative and talented young lady, she spent her school years playing classical music on the piano and making dresses.

Mildred trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital, later rising to the position of matron before retiring. However, as she puts it, “once a nurse, always a nurse.” Her dedication to caring for others has stayed with her throughout her life.

Beyond her nursing career, Mildred enjoys folk dancing and jazz music, always keeping an active and joyful spirit. This year, she is looking forward to celebrating her 67th wedding anniversary, marking another special milestone in her life.

Jean

Jean, born in 1936 in Birmingham, grew up in a lively household filled with dogs, chickens, cows, and horses. From a young age, Jean had a passion for fashion and design and a love for travel.

Later in life, she shifted her focus to supporting women in need, working at a women’s refuge for abused and homeless women. In this role, Jean became a protector and advocate, empowering many women and giving them a chance to rebuild their lives.

Jean’s daughter, Sue, followed in her mother’s footsteps as a talented artist, even creating a stunning painting of Jean to be displayed in a gallery and featured in the local press for a story capturing Jean’s inspiring life and legacy.

The Kingsclear team is proud to celebrate the incredible women of their community this International Women’s Day. Having lived through pivotal eras, these women have helped to shape a better future, paving the way for women today. With their strength, wisdom, and compassion, they’re truly an inspiration to us all and a very special part of the Kingsclear family!
