Oak Manor’s Big Bird Watch

Residents at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Norfolk have kicked off RSPB Big Bird Watch Week with a series of fun activities designed to get them involved in bird watching and nature conservation. They started the week by getting hands-on, making their own bird feeders, which they hung up around the garden in hopes of attracting local wildlife.

The bird feeders were made using a mix of seeds, mealworms, and Cheerios, all carefully put together by the residents during an arts and crafts session. Kat, the wellbeing coordinator, planned the activities and gathered all the materials, ensuring that everyone had a chance to get creative while also contributing to a meaningful cause.

The goal of the RSPB Big Bird Watch is to help collect data on the types of birds seen in people’s gardens, with a particular focus on identifying those that are becoming less common. As the bird feeders went up, residents eagerly headed outside to spot and record any birds that appeared, ticking them off their bird-watching sheet.

“What a lovely idea,” said resident, Liz, who enjoyed the hands-on experience and the chance to connect with nature. Residents are excited to continue the birdwatching week, and they can’t wait to see which feathered friends will visit next! The project has not only been a fun and creative way to spend time together but also an opportunity to support vital research in protecting local bird species.
