Residents, family members and the team at Sundridge Court Nursing Home in Bromley have been celebrating the 100th birthday of beloved resident, Lily ‘Edna’ Joan Wheeler. Born on 17th February 1925, Edna has reached this incredible milestone with a lifetime of love, family, and fond memories.
Edna has been a member of the Sundridge Court community for the past four years. She is well known for her warm smile and enthusiasm for group activities, especially enjoying regular exercise sessions and always brings positivity to those around her.
Originally from Beckenham, Edna left school at 14 to work at a dry cleaners before helping in her parents’ greengrocer’s shop during the war years. Once her children started school, she continued her career as a sales assistant at the Co-op until retirement. She married her beloved husband, Ron Wheeler, on 18th March 1944 under a ‘Special Licence’ due to the war—Ron was sent overseas just two days later.
Family has always been at the heart of Edna’s life. She is one of eight siblings and a proud mother to twins Marilyn and Michael, born at home in 1946. Her family has since grown to include two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
To mark this extraordinary milestone, Sundridge Court hosted a celebration for Edna surrounded by her fellow residents and the team. A special family gathering also took place, allowing her loved ones to come together and honour her incredible century of life.
When asked about the secret to a long life, Edna simply shared, “Being happy and enjoying every moment.”
