Walstead Place couple celebrates 65 years together

Love is in the air at Walstead Place Care Home in Haywards Heath this Valentine’s Day, as residents Val and Anthony celebrate another year of happiness together.

Celebrating 65 years together, Val and Anthony first met at a scholar’s club in Dulwich in the early 1960s. After a period of being engaged, they married in 1969, surrounded by their friends and family in Dulwich.

In the years that followed, Val and Anthony had two children, Dominic and Alison, and decided to move to Ifield in West Sussex for a more peaceful life outside of London for their children.

Val worked as a secretary for the British Red Cross for many years, while Anthony had a career as a civil servant in London. An academic at heart, Anthony had a passion for theology and even published a book on the subject. Val was also dedicated to the local Girl Guides, where she spent many years volunteering as a leader.

The family enjoyed wonderful holidays, often staying in university homes available to rent on the grounds. They appreciated the surroundings and the history of the buildings.

When asked about the key to a lasting marriage, Val answered, “The ability to listen to each other and talk about everything.”
